"In 2019 we chose Pinot Meunier as our one off experimental red variety. Following in the footsteps of the 2017 Nero and the 2018 Dolcetto this wine is cut from a similar cloth, juicy drinking wine that goes very well in summer with a bit of a chill. Sourced from a new vineyard for us located in Myrrhee, a picturesque tributary valley of the main King River system. The vineyard was originally planted in the 1990's by visionary winemaker Peter Read who realised that the climate and soils were ideal for growing then un-heralded varieties from cool regions of the world. Today the Vineyard is run by Peter and Suzanne Evans and when the opportunity to take some homeless Pinot Meunier arose, a product of the “Prosecco Boom”, we jumped at the opportunity. This vineyard also grows Tannat, Sapperavi, Petit Mangseng along with a bunch of other alternative varieties so don’t be surprised to see this vineyard on the back labels of future releases.
As with all wines released under the Nomads Garden range input from us in the winery was kept to an absolute minimum.
Once in the winery we really stepped up the experimental nature of this wine. 80% of the grapes were destemmed but not crushed with the remaining 15% staying as whole bunches. This is where it gets different, the grapes were then hand bucketed into into custom made 500L French Oak Puncheon fermentors with the wholebunches sandwiched in the middle. The Puncheons were then filled with CO2 and locked down with a one way gas pressure valve to allow the release of CO2 generated by the ferment. Then we left it, we didn’t touch it for 10 days at which point we opened them up to find that a lovely carbonic maceration was underway as although a majority of the grapes we destemmed they were not crushed meaning the berries were intact and fermenting from the inside out. We then proceeded to plunge the ferments daily for another 2 weeks before gently basket pressing to old French oak. 12 months maturation in seasoned French Oak before gentle filtration and hand bottling at our winery.
